FAQs

Should pulled pork be covered in liquid in slow cooker? ›

Pour the water, around, but not on top of, the pork. Scatter the garlic and onion around the pork. Cover and cook on the LOW setting until the meat is tender and can be easily shredded, 10 to 12 hours.

Is co*ke or Dr Pepper better for pulled pork? ›

Pepper soda, which acts as a tenderizer for the meat and adds so much flavor during the low and slow cooking process. Any similar soda that you enjoy will work well — Coca Cola and root beer are also great options and can be substituted in equal quantities.

How long to keep pulled pork in crock pot? ›

Slow cook the pork 14 to 16 hours.

Cover and cook on the LOW setting until the pork is soft enough to pull apart with a spoon, 14 to 16 hours.

What is the best liquid to cook pulled pork in? ›

For an all-American classic, I use a mix of ketchup, grainy mustard, apple cider vinegar, and Coca-Cola. Your liquid should not cover your pork in the slow cooker: it should only come up about a quarter of the way up the sides. The pork will make more liquid as it cooks, and you need to leave room for that.

What happens if there is not enough liquid in a slow cooker? ›

Not adding enough liquid can lead to burning.

"It's important to add enough liquid to ensure the bottom of your dish doesn't burn."

What liquid keeps pulled pork moist? ›

Additionally, spray chicken broth or apple juice on the meat to prevent it from losing more moisture in the crockpot. To add a strong flavor during the process, white wine can also be sprayed.

Why put Dr Pepper in pulled pork? ›

Injecting with the cherry Dr Pepper adds flavor to the inside of the pork butt and increases the juiciness of the finished product. I put an ounce or so of cherry Dr Pepper about every 2 inches across the top of the butt.

Why add apple cider vinegar to pulled pork? ›

The acid from the apple cider and apple cider vinegar help to tenderize the meat while also keeping it juicy and flavorful. The low and slow cooking method makes it fall apart as soon as your fork touches it and shreds beautifully.

Why add soda to pulled pork? ›

It's the carbonation and flavoring you want from sodas like root beer or cola—the syrupy body isn't necessary. Soda belongs in your cooking, folks, and we've got some ideas on how to make it really pop. Cola's high acidity and caramel flavor makes a surprisingly good meat tenderizer.

Can I leave pulled pork in the crock pot overnight? ›

I like to cook the pulled pork overnight and place it in the fridge to keep it fresh during the day, before reheating it for dinner. You will need 11 hours to cook this pulled pork so make sure you give yourself enough time to cook.

Should I flip pork shoulder in a crock pot? ›

Close the Proofer and allow the pork to cook for a total of 10 or 11 hours. Midway during the slow cook process you can turn the pork over once. After 10 hours check the interior of the pork with a thermometer. We recommend a temperature of 195-200 °F / 90-93 °C for tender, juicy pork which pulls apart easily.

Does pulled pork go fat side up in slow cooker? ›

Worgul recommends placing the pork in the slow-cooker fat side up. The fat will render thoroughly during the cooking process and by placing the meat fat side up, it makes it much easier to remove excess fat before serving. "The cooker will be nearly filled with fat and liquid after hours of cooking.

How do I get more flavor in my pulled pork? ›

We use brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, smoked paprika, a good amount of salt & pepper, and a pinch of cayenne! Make sure you use all of the seasoning! Also, really rub it into the pulled pork, get all of the nooks and crannies!

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low? ›

Low: 7-8 hours to reach the simmer point. High: 3-4 hours to reach the simmer point.

Can you use co*ke instead of root beer for pulled pork? ›

And if you don't have any root beer on hand, or you're simply not a root beer fan, that's okay! Many sodas will work in the same way. Colas, like co*ke or Pepsi, or even flavored versions of cola (cherry for example) lend their flavors nicely to slow-cooked pork.

Should pulled pork be fully submerged? ›

Pour 1 1/2 cups liquid, such as low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth, tomato juice, light or amber beer, white or red wine, orange juice, or a mix of several liquids (and optional liquid smoke) over the pork. The pork should be only partially submerged, with some of the pork remaining above the surface of the liquid.

Do you leave pulled pork in the juice? ›

Remove the pan from the smoker and let the meat cool for about an hour. Pour the juice into a separate container if desired and pull or shred the meat into pieces using two forks. You can also leave the juices in the pan to mix into the meat as it's pulled apart. Serve immediately!

Should food be covered with liquid in a slow cooker? ›
