Election Results 2024 Live: Will the exit polls hold ground?
We are minutes away from the counting of votes and I want to remind everyone about the predictions put forward by the exit polls.
- In the overall projection, India-Today-My Axis poll and Today’s Chanakya have taken the NDA tally to over 400 seats, in tune with the BJP’s “400-paar” target. The My Axis forecasts 322-340 seats for the BJP and 60-75 seats for the Congress. Axis projected INDIA alliance to get 131-166 seats while Chanakya predicted it to be between 96 and 118.
- Coming to ABP-CVoter, NDA is predicted to garner 353-383 seats and INDIA 152-182 seats. Jan Ki Baat estimated the ruling alliance may win between 362 seats and 392 seats. The same exit poll estimated 141-161 seats for the INDIA bloc.
- INDIA News-D-Dynamics estimated 371 seats for NDA and 125 seats for INDIA alliance. Republic TV-P-Marq poll estimated 359 seats for NDA and 154 seats for the INDIA alliance. Another exit poll of Republic Bharat-Matrize estimated 353-368 seats for NDA and 118-133 seats for INDIA.
- The Poll of Polls by television channel NDTV estimated that the BJP-led NDA is getting 358 seats and INDIA alliance getting 148 seats; other parties are protected to get 37 seats.

Election Results 2024 Live: How agrarian distress became less of a poll issue this time
It’s going to be third time in a row if the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance forms the government after today’s counting of votes. However, a thing to keep in mind is how, during the second term, the government saw farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, force a repeal of its agricultural reform laws, and also demand a legislation providing statutory backing for minimum support prices of crops.
Yet, Modi 2.0 has not been marked by a “farm crisis” of the sort witnessed during the Modi government’s first term (Modi 1.0), resulting from both crop production declines and price collapses. Not surprisingly, krishi sankat (agrarian distress) hasn’t been as much of an issue in the current national elections as berozgari (unemployment) and mehangai (inflation).

In a few hours, the country will have elected members of the 18th Lok Sabha and it is only apt to have a recap of how the Lower House of Parliament performed in the last 5 years. It held sittings for a total of 274 days across five years — only four previous Lok Sabha had fewer sitting days.
However, the 17th Lok Sabha will go down in history as the one having the highest number of suspensions. There were a total 206 instances of MPs in both the Lower and Upper House being suspended. In the 2023 Winter Session alone, 146 MPs were suspended for staging protests in Parliament.
It also witnessed one no-confidence motion moved against the government and was also notable for the absence of a Deputy Speaker. It was the first time in the history of the Lower House that no Deputy Speaker was appointed for the duration of the Lok Sabha tenure.

Election Results 2024 Live: The battleground states and why they hold key
Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana — these are the states where the Opposition’s INDIA bloc will hope to make a mark to halt the BJP’s march towards a thumping victory again. Of these, two states — Haryana and Maharashtra — go to Assembly polls later this year. A third state, Bihar, will hold Assembly polls late next year.
However, these are again states where the NDA won, and won big. In Bihar, the NDA had won 39 of 40 seats last time. In UP, the NDA had won 64 seats, leaving 10 to the BSP, five to the SP (when the two had fought in an alliance) and one to the Congress. This time, the SP and the Congress are fighting elections together in UP.
In Delhi, with the AAP and the Congress fighting separately, the BJP had won all seven seats in 2019. This time, the AAP and the Congress are together, both in Delhi and Haryana, where in 2019, the situation was similar.

Election Results 2024 Live: A list of states where postal ballots decided winners
Not often do we pay much attention to the postal ballots but an analysis of votes polled in 2019 will show that in numerous instances, it is these votes that turned out to be key when it came to deciding the winner. Here’s a list of these seats:
- In West Bengal’s Arambagh, TMC defeated the BJP by a margin of 1,142 votes; a total of 1,549 postal ballots were counted there in 2019.
- The BJP retained the Khunti seat in Jharkhand by defeating the Congress candidate by a margin of 1,445 votes. As many as 1,951 postal ballots were counted in Khunti in the last Lok Sabha polls.
- BJP ally Janata Dal (United) defeated the Rashtriya Janata Dal in Jehanabad seat of Bihar by a margin of 1,751 votes. A total of 5,091 postal ballots were counted there, which was almost three times the victory margin.
- In Chamarajanagar seat of Karnataka, the BJP wrested the seat from the Congress, defeating it by 1,817 votes. As many as 2,943 postal ballots were polled in the seat.
- In Tamil Nadu’s Chidambaram, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) defeated AIADMK by 3,219 votes and a total of 3,807 postal ballots were counted.
- In Odisha, the Congress won the Koraput seat by defeating the BJD candidate by 3,613 votes and the total number of postal ballots polled there was 3,789, slightly higher than the victory margin.
- The trend of more postal ballots than win margin was recorded on two seats of Andhra Pradesh—Guntur and Visakhapatnam. In Guntur, the TDP emerged victorious, defeating the YSRCP by a margin of 4,205 votes. A total of 5,264 postal ballots were counted there.
- In Visakhapatnam, the YSRCP defeated the TDP by a margin of 4,414 votes and a total of 6,278 postal ballots were polled in the seat.

Election Results 2024 Live: What the BJP’s huddle on Monday decided on
Monday witnessed the BJP leaders gathering at their headquarters for a meeting chaired by president J P Nadda. The meet was also attended by senior ministers, including Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh.
BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde said the leaders discussed and reviewed the voting pattern observed during all seven phases of polls. Asked if the meeting also discussed BJP’s plans for celebrating its victory given that most exit polls projected it to be getting a massive mandate for a third consecutive term, Tawde said, “There is no such discussion on this at present. We look into this only after seeing the trends, not on the basis of the exit polls’ projections.”
Replying to a query on government formation, the BJP leader said there was no discussion on it. “The meeting only reviewed the elections and voting and discussed arrangements and deployment (of party workers) for counting of votes,” he said.

The My Axis forecasts 322-340 seats for the BJP and 60-75 seats for the Congress. Axis projected INDIA alliance to get 131-166 seats while Chanakya predicted it to be between 96 and 118.
- Coming to ABP-CVoter, NDA is predicted to garner 353-383 seats and INDIA 152-182 seats. Jan Ki Baat estimated the ruling alliance may win between 362 seats and 392 seats. The same exit poll estimated 141-161 seats for the INDIA bloc.
- INDIA News-D-Dynamics estimated 371 seats for NDA and 125 seats for INDIA alliance. Republic TV-P-Marq poll estimated 359 seats for NDA and 154 seats for the INDIA alliance. Another exit poll of Republic Bharat-Matrize estimated 353-368 seats for NDA and 118-133 seats for INDIA.
- The Poll of Polls by television channel NDTV estimated that the BJP-led NDA is getting 358 seats and INDIA alliance getting 148 seats; other parties are protected to get 37 seats.

Election Results 2024 Live Updates: Finally, how are the results announced?
Now, answering the main question — after all EVMs for a particular round have been counted, and the Election Commission Observer has conducted a parallel count of two randomly selected EVMs, a tabulation for the round is done.
The RO announces the result of that round of counting, and signs the relevant record (Part II of Form 17C). Following this, the RO/ ARO verbally authorises the EVMs for the next round to be brought from the strong room into the counting hall.
The tallying of VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) commences after all rounds of EVM counting are completed. This process is done sequentially, not simultaneously, for all polling stations. On average, it takes about an hour to verify the slips from each VVPAT machine.

Election Results 2024 Live: Where will the votes be counted?
For all those wondering as to where the counting of votes takes place, the Election Commission has well-defined rules for it. According to Rule 51 (“Time and place for counting of votes”) of The Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, the “returning officer shall, at least one week before the date, or the first of the dates, fixed for the poll, appoint the place or places where the counting of votes will be done and the date and time at which the counting will commence…”
The ECI’s Handbook for Returning Officers says: “For the sake of uniformity, the date and time of counting of votes is fixed by the Commission.” The location of the counting is determined by the RO and should “preferably” be at the RO’s headquarters in the constituency. However, the ECI notes that “there will be no legal objection even if the place so fixed is outside the limit of the constituency”.
Votes for a specific Assembly constituency are counted at a single location. However, the ECI says that “each Assembly constituency or an Assembly segment of a parliamentary constituency is to be counted in a separate hall and under no circ*mstances can the counting of more than one Assembly constituency be taken simultaneously in a hall”.

Election Results 2024 Live: Who are allowed inside the counting hall?
Now, a thing to keep in mind is that not everyone is allowed inside the area where the counting takes place. A counting hall may have several counting tables. Since the candidate or their election agent cannot be present at every counting location and table, the law permits the candidate to appoint as many counting agents as there are counting tables, including the table where postal ballots are counted.
The following are allowed to enter the counting hall: counting supervisers, counting assistants, micro-observers, ECI-authorised individuals and Observers, public servants on election duty, and candidates, election agents, and counting agents.

Moving on to who remains in-charge of the counting process. The counting is carried out under the supervision and direction of the Returning Officer (RO) for each seat, in the presence of the candidates and their election agents. The RO, who is typically the District Magistrate of the district concerned, is nominated by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Assistant Returning Officers are also empowered to oversee the counting, especially where an RO is responsible for more than one constituency. The actual counting of votes in the Electronic Voting Machines at various tables is done by counting officials appointed by the RO, based on the anticipated number of postal ballots and the number of counting tables.

Well, there are two types of votes that are counted: EVM votes, and the ones that have been cast through postal ballots (which are used for senior citizens, physically challenged individuals, service voters, etc). The process begins with the counting of postal ballots. All postal ballots are counted at the RO’s table. EVM counting starts 30 minutes later. The Strong Room, where the polled EVMs are stored, is opened in the presence of the Observer, RO/ ARO(s), and the candidates or their election agents.
