As we stretch into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the year. You'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, proper tending, and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got advice to help you, your garden, and your lawn make it through the hotter months.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or metal or plastic sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll usually discover it once you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by pet behavior or extreme wear, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.
Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the sparse spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of grass that likes dappled sun or shade.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering humming along. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers droop and wilt when but recover when they dry. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For savory flavors to accent your homegrown produce, try herb gardening. They grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors, and are often low-maintenance. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So grow them in small decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in regular black dirt. Instead, they grow in a mixture of perlite, sand, or rock chips.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Set up vines to climb a trellis or arched arbor to provide both beauty and shade. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Jasmine, wisteria, and ivy are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
