Microsoft's four-year campaign to eliminate basic authentication for email protocols in Exchange Online has proven highly successful. Directed by Greg Taylor, the effort significantly reduced daily counts of basic authentication connections, dropping from approximately 70 million to nearly zero. Basic authentication had been a preferred route for attackers, with 99% of password spray attacks against Microsoft 365 relying on it. Microsoft used various tactics to drive this transition, including disabling basic authentication for specific tenants, automatically disabling unused protocols, and pushing Outlook clients to switch to modern authentication. Partnerships with companies like Apple and Google also played a role in facilitating this transition.
