I wasn't new to Trader Joe's vegan caramelized-onion dip when I sampled it for this taste test but after trying it again, I was reminded of why it's my go-to for parties. It's absolutely delightful.

What is the best liquid to caramelize onions in? ›

You can use either oil or butter to caramelize onions — but ideally, you use a combination of both! I like to use olive oil, and this cooking fat tolerates heat particularly well. Meanwhile, butter adds a distinctly rich flavor to the caramelized onions.

What is the secret to caramelize onions? ›

As soon as the onions start sticking to the pan, let them stick a little and brown, but then stir them before they burn. The trick is to leave them alone enough to brown (if you stir them too often, they won't brown), but not so long so that they burn.

Why is Dean's French onion dip so good? ›

It's our most popular flavor because it combines a creamy, smooth texture with just the right balance of French Onion flavor.

Can you put too much butter in caramelized onions? ›

You definitely want the flavor of butter in your onions—but butter has the tendency to burn. For insurance, use a combination of butter and oil, which has a higher smoking point. But how much do you use? Depending on the consistency you want your onions, you can use more or less fat.

Do you use oil or butter to caramelize onions? ›

Our Test Kitchen likes to use butter when caramelizing onions, as it offers the richest flavor. If you avoid dairy or don't have butter, you can caramelize onions in other fat such as margarine or olive oil. Add the onion slices. It's okay if they overlap a bit here because they'll shrink as they cook down.

Why add vinegar to caramelize onions? ›

Tip: use apple cider vinegar for white and yellow onions and balsamic vinegar for red onions. Tip: the vinegar serves to deglaze the pan, adds acidity, and brings this recipe together by boosting the tangy and savory flavors of the caramelized onions. If the onions stick to the pan, that's fine.

Do you cook bacon or onion first? ›

When sauteing bacon and onion, always put the bacon in first to start rendering. Bacon takes close to 10 minutes to get crispy and onion will get translucent in about 5.

Why do you add baking soda to caramelize onions? ›

Baking soda makes the onions more alkaline, which speeds up the browning reactions necessary for properly caramelized onions. But it also weakens the pectin that holds the onion's cells together, turning what should be soft but distinct pieces of browned onion into a nauseating stew of pea-green mush.

How to use Trader Joe's caramelized onion dip? ›

Smear it onto burgers and sandwiches, use it as a crostini topping, or dollop it onto crispy smashed potatoes. You just might need this Trader Joe's dip in your fridge at all times.

What is the difference between caramelized onions and sauteed onions? ›

Sautéing is about softening and lightly flavoring the onions, while caramelizing is about developing a rich, sweet complexity. Unfortunately, you can't swap one out for the other without changing the flavor profile of your dish. Sautéing onions quickly brings out their natural flavors while maintaining some brightness.
